⚽️🇮🇹 Parma and Milan to make broadcast history this weekend
In this week’s Italian soccer digest, we're digging into Atalanta's impressive start, we're finding out about Cagliari's new discovery, and much more!
📺 Watch Milan’s milestone visit to Parma on Saturday
For the first time in history, a Serie A game will be shown on U.S. broadcast television, when Parma host Milan this Saturday (12.30pm ET, CBS). Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki - born in Newark, New Jersey - has a hot tip for you…
🗣️ Australia National Team and Parma defender Alessandro Circati spoke with CBS Sports Galazo about his excitement for the fixture: “Playing against such a big team and being televised by CBS is such a huge thing - I can’t wait!”
🔴 Milan played out a 2-2 draw against Torino in their season opener, in which USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah notched an assist (more on that shortly) and fellow American Christian Pulisic played in the No.10 role. Both players should be available for selection at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.
🗣️ Former striker Giuseppe Rossi, who started his career with Parma, told Calcio Weekly about his excitement for the game: “When I was younger, finding games on the TV was impossible - we had the RAI international broadcast that played one game every Sunday. It's so much easier now and for the game to be on CBS is big news. I hope a lot of people tune in!”
🙌 Tim Weah scores first Serie A goal
The Bianconeri are off to a winning start under new coach Thiago Motta, after booking a 3-0 home win over newly promoted Como on Monday. USMNT star Tim Weah scored his first Serie A goal shortly before half time…
🤕 Weah, who is beginning his sophomore season in Turin, saw his impressive first-time shot ricochet off the bar to cross the line. However, the 24-year-old was subbed out shortly afterwards with a hamstring injury.
🩺 Juventus confirmed a “low-grade hamstring injury” in Weah’s right thigh, to be examined again just before the end of the month. The assessment will come shortly before USMNT players will report to camp for friendlies against Canada and New Zealand.
Weah’s countryman Weston McKennie was an unused sub, but prior to the game, Coach Motta said he is “a useful and functional player for our needs.” ESPN reports that the American is in talks to renew his contract in Turin.
👉 Up next for Juve: Motta’s side will head to Verona for its second game of the season on Monday (2.45pm ET, CBS Sports). When they last met at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium, back in February, it ended in a 2-2 draw.
🇺🇸 Yunus Musah helps seal Milan comeback with vital assist
As previously noted, Milan began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Torino at the San Siro last weekend. The Rossoneri were behind in the 95th minute, before Yunus Musah put a cross perfectly on the foot of teammate Noah Okafor…
💪 Musah replaced Pulisic in the 73rd minute, managing five shots and 94% pass completion before his vital contribution. The assist is his third for the club since joining last season.
🎥 Want to see more of Musah and his Milan team? One more time for the people in the back: the Rossoneri will be part of the first-ever Serie A game on U.S. broadcast television on Saturday, when they travel to Parma (12.30pm ET, CBS). The newly promoted hosts will be hoping to bring their points tally to four after tying in their opener…
🎯 ICYMI: Fiorentina’s incredible free kick equalizer
Parma were on their way to their first Serie A win in three seasons on Saturday, before visitors Fiorentina drew level through a Cristiano Biraghi free kick from the unlikeliest of angles. Pick that out!
At 31-years-old and in his seventh season with La Viola, one might start to consider Biraghi a “senatore”…
💬 Calcio Conversations
Every team has them, every team needs them… but who exactly are the senatori?
🤷♂️ What does it mean? Senatori translates directly to “senators” and is derived from the political term. But in the world of calcio, it refers to the more experienced players within a squad.
🫡 Who qualifies as a senatore? The term can be used to describe players who have been around the longest, are the oldest, made the most appearances or who are part of the leadership group. Or a combination of all of the above!
🏴 Cagliari sign ‘wonderkid’ from 11th tier of English soccer
Cagliari may have found a diamond in the rough, in the form of 18-year-old midfielder Jack Nunn, who was playing amateur soccer in England before a dream move to Italy this season.
🤯 Until a few months ago, Nunn was studying at college and playing for Stoke Gifford United in the Gloucestershire County League, which sits 10 divisions below the English Premier League.
👏 However, after impressing a Calgliari at a tournament for college players in Rome, the teenager - described as a ‘wonderkid’ in the UK press - put pen to paper on a contract with Cagliari Primavera, the Serie A side’s youth team.
🗣️ “It feels surreal. It’s not the most usual of things to happen, that's for sure,” the teenager told Bristol Live, following his dream move to Sardinia.
👉 Cagliari survived on the final day of Serie A action last season, with Claudio Ranieri at the helm. In their first match of this campaign, under new coach Davide Nicola, they held Roma to a draw. On Monday, they host newly promoted Como (12.30pm ET, CBS Sports).

🔝 Atalanta’s impressive start fueled by new signings
Atalanta shot to the top of Serie A on game week one thanks to a resounding 4-0 win at Lecce. Debutants Marco Brescianini and Mateo Retegui both scored braces at the Stadio Via del mare.
👍 Italy National Team striker Retegui arrived from Genoa this summer, while Brescianini is on loan from Frosinone. It appears departing stars Aleksei Miranchuk and Duván Zapata have been adequately replaced!
👏 Last season, under much-admired coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta won the Europa League, made the Coppa Italia Final and finished fourth in the league, to qualify for the Champions League. So don’t be surprised if their impressive start leads to another fantastic season.
😮 Gasperini has now earned over 550 points with La Dea. Only Carlo Ancelotti (Milan) and Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus) have managed more points with a single club.
👉 Up next for Atalanta: The Bergamo side travel to Torino on Sunday, against whom they have won three of their last four encounters (12.30pm ET, CBS Sports).
